History in Every Room

Present Since the Birth of Jacksonville

The oldest part of the Bella Union Restaurant and Saloon at 170 W. California Street was constructed in 1874 by pioneer woodworker and builder David Linn after the fire of 1874 destroyed many of the original buildings in Jacksonville.

Linn had purchased the lot in 1856 and erected a one-story brick building to house his woodworking shop. After Linn relocated his business to the corner of California and Oregon, he rented the space to a series of tenants, including Prussian native Henry Breitbarth.

Breitbarth operated the original Bella Union Saloon at this location from 1864 to 1871. It was one of 7 saloons in early Jacksonville and offered its customers billiards and liquors.

The Bella Union as it stands today has been independently owned and operated for 36 years. Opened in 1988 by Jerry Hayes, “The Bella” has been a gathering place for locals ever since.

Well known for the award winning patio covered by a single 100 year old Wisteria plant, a magical setting filled with twinkling lights and overhead heaters for the colder season.

Offering local live music Thursday-Saturday in the Bella Saloon, as well as multiple dining rooms that can accommodate groups of all sizes.

Today, the tradition continues with Chef Tom Bates & Christian Hamilton as partners & Jerry’s predecessors. Tom & Christian were original employees of Jerry’s in 1988 and continue to preserve the history, recipes & life of The Bella Union.
