History in Every Room
Present Since the Birth of Jacksonville
The oldest part of the Bella Union, at 170 W. California Street, was constructed in 1874 by pioneer woodworker and builder David Linn after the fire of 1874 destroyed many of the original buildings in Jacksonville.
Linn had purchased the lot in 1856 and erected a one-story brick building to house his woodworking shop. After Linn relocated his business to the corner of California and Oregon, he rented the space to a series of tenants, including Prussian native Henry Breitbarth.
Breitbarth operated the original Bella Union Saloon at this location from 1864 to 1871. It was one of 7 saloons in early Jacksonville and offered its customers billiards and liquors.
The Bella Union as it stands today has been independently owned and operated for almost 40 years. Opened in 1988 by Jerry Hayes, “The Bella” has been a gathering place for locals ever since.
Well known for our award winning patio , shaded by a single 100‑year‑old wisteria vine — twinkling lights above and heaters when the evenings turn cool..
Offering local live music Thursday-Saturday in the Bella Saloon as well as many eclectic dining areas that can accommodate groups of all sizes.
Today, the tradition continues with Chef Tom Bates and Christian Hamilton as partners and Jerry’s successors. Tom and Christian were original employees in 1988 and continue to preserve the history, recipes and life of The Bella Union.
